Filming Made Simple: 12 Tips for Small YouTubers and Creators Over 55

If you’re new to YouTube, feeling comfortable on camera can feel like an uphill battle. I’ve been there, and while I’ve only uploaded a few long-form videos so far, I’ve learned some game-changing tips that I’m excited to share! These are especially helpful for small YouTubers or creators over 55 looking to earn money through YouTube during retirement.

1. Pretend You’re Talking to a Friend
When the camera starts rolling, picture yourself chatting with your best friend. It’s an easy way to relax and stay natural.

2. Practice on Instagram Stories
Instagram Stories are perfect for practice! They disappear in 24 hours, so there’s no pressure. Record short videos to build confidence, even if you don’t post them.

3. Master Your Equipment
Use your back camera with a mirror to ensure framing or the front camera for convenience. Good lighting, like natural light in your car, makes a big difference.

4. Keep Rolling
Don’t stop your camera every time you need a break—just keep it rolling. It makes editing much smoother.

5. Smile and Be Exaggerated
Smiling and emphasizing your words can make your videos more engaging. Take a moment to smile directly at the camera for your thumbnail too.

6. Outline, Don’t Script
Having a loose outline keeps you on track without sounding robotic. Review your points before filming to feel prepared.

7. Don’t Wait for Perfect
Your schedule will never be perfect. Film when you can, even if it’s in your car or between errands.

These tips have made a huge difference in my confidence and video quality, and I know they’ll help you too. What’s your favorite filming tip? Share it in the comments!
